Johor Bahru, often referred as JB, is the state capital of Johor in southern peninsular Malaysia.
Located just across the causeway from Singapore, JB is a bustling city which serves as a significant regional transport and manufacturing hub.
JB can be easily divided into 4 districts :
South
The main city centre of JB which has a link to Singapore via the causeway. This is an area with housing estates which have been around for more than 3 decades. Key estates include Taman Pelangi, Taman Century, Taman Sentosa and Stulang Laut.
North
Taman Johor Jaya is the main centre in JB North district. The North district can be easily accessed via Jalan Tebrau. There can be a relatively frequent peak hour jam along Jalan Tebrau. Recently, the Austin area has been a hive for construction activities with the popular Jusco Tebrau City locating in its vincinity.
West
The West district is probably one of the largest areas of the 4. Skudai holds the key housing estates such as Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Taman Skudai Baru, Taman Bukit Indah, Taman Perling and Taman Nusa Bestari. Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas, the largest port in Johor is located in this district.
East
The East district has been around for more than 20 years, with Pasir Gudang serving as both a port city and manufacturing hub. Tanjung Langsat (near Pasir Gudang) is a fast-growing petro chemical hub.
Connected to Singapore by road and rail via a modern causeway, JB is also the Peninsula's southern gateway.
Consisting of a diverse ethnic mix of races, JB offers visitors an abundance of heritage attractions, colorful culture, delectable local cuisine, and exciting recreational activities.
Popular with Singaporeans, JB boasts of myriad landmarks, such as The Grand Palace with its distinct Anglo-Malay architecture, which houses the museum where priceless treasures of the Royal Collection are showcased.
Shopping opportunities abound in JB. Modern malls, arcades, handicraft centers, bazaars and markets offering international and local products all vie for attention. Local craftwork is sure to catch the eye and they do make lovely souvenirs of a trip here.
Mid-High range hotels are aplenty, and to a comfortable and cosy standard.
Another interesting side of JB can be experienced when night falls over the city. A sumptuous array of food stalls and vendors appear and the adventurous tourist should delight in trying out the taste of popular local dishes such as the famous Laksa Johor, flake fish and gravy cooked with coconut milk and served with noodles and vegetables.
